The Republican Party in the Post Truth Era and the world of alternative facts

The lies and manipulation didn’t start in 2016 with the election of republican candidate Donald Trump, as the president of the United States,  it rather started  20 years earlier, in the mid 90’s when Newt Gingrich got elected in Congress, as famous journalist Dana Milbank  describes in his new book The Destructionists: The Twenty-Five Year Crack-Up of the Republican Party . 

The republican campaign was full of false claims, innuendo, conspiracy theories, refusal to cooperate, and obvious appeals to “white people, particularly those without college degrees, who fear the loss of their way of life in a multicultural America”. Moreover, their lies were amplified and transmitted to the masses by conservative talk hosts like Rush Limbaugh, Gordon Liddy or Sean Hannity and Fox News. 

Later Republicans followed the same line. Karl Rove and the Bush administration continued to lie and deceive the American people by getting us into the Iraq war, under false pretenses. The conspiracies and falsehoods promoted were not just against Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, but sometimes even against their own party candidates, such as John McCain or others who were not in line with their crazy agenda. The lies Tump promoted were similar, from the playbook of the other GOP candidates. He started with the Obama’s birth certificate and continued with the false claims of the election results being rigged or stolen.
